Socketware Adopts Emerging E-mail Authentication Methods to Combat 'Phishing'

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 2004--Socketware, Inc., makers of Accucast e-mail communication products today announced that Accucast Accelerator is 100% compliant with America Online's SPF and Microsoft's Caller ID e-mail authentication programs. These technology solutions help Internet Service Providers differentiate legitimate e-mail marketers from deceptive spammers. Both AOL and Microsoft have recently introduced unique technology solutions designed to prevent "phishing," or the fraudulent misrepresentation of e-mail sender identity.
Spammers often hide behind false identities, posing as legitimate companies in order to trick e-mail recipients into releasing personal and financial information. A study by the Anti-Phishing Working Group found that "Phishing" attacks totaled 1,125 in April 2004, nearly tripling from March, and up 40% from November 2003. Microsoft and AOL's solutions attempt to stop this tactic by inviting e-mail senders to verify their identity through published Domain Name System (DNS) records. If the DNS record of the sending company does not match what is provided, the mail is considered suspect and may be filtered or blocked by the ISP. Socketware has adopted this solution to help ensure that clients are classified as legitimate e-mail senders and to bolster the ISPs battle against fraudulent e-mail.

Sending Email "Socketware's mission is to improve inbox delivery for our customers. By embracing the solutions enacted by Microsoft and AOL, we are taking steps to improve client deliverability and reduce the chances that our customers are the target of deceitful schemes," said Socketware's Chief Technology Officer John Karnes. "Caller ID and SPF have the potential to be very successful in slowing the tide of falsified e-mail and Socketware is proud to stand behind these promising technology advances."

Antispam Software Contacts

For the past year I have been using a program called "Boxtrapper". Until this time I had been relying on various spam filters that used keywords or other factors to determine if an email was spam. The success rate for this type of filtering varied as spammers eventually found ways around the "formula" being used by the filter. For example, the word "Valium" may be flagged as a spam indicator while the misspelled version, "Va Lium", would get by unnoticed. This is just one of many examples of how spammers manipulate words to beat filtering. The biggest problem is when spammers "spoof" the header information in an email so it's nearly impossible to trace who sent the message. I have even seen instances of people receiving spam emails that appear to have come from themselves!
