Phishing schemes are often used to gather confidential information about an organization or it's individual users. Such schemes typically involve emails in which the "From" portion of the email envelope is spoofed to appear as if it was coming from someone within the organization. When enabled, the Barracuda Spam Firewall's new anti-spoofing features will not allow an external email to appear as if it came from inside the organization. Any email that would have this appearance would be blocked or modified such that its origination outside the organization is visible.
peer networking software as its spreading vector. Pharming Pharming (pronounced farming) is a scam technique that is similar to phishing. It is an attempt to steal personal information using false web sites. Pharming attacks seed false information on Internet DNS servers that provide location information. The result is that individuals are directed to web sites to seem to be genuine, but are actually false.

"Phishing schemes have become increasingly problematic for organizations over the past several months as the techniques used have become more sophisticated and more sinister," said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. "With the new anti-spoofing features, our customers can be assured that the email they receive in their inbox is not being sent by an impersonator outside the company. This new feature is another example of Barracuda Networks continued efforts to make the Barracuda Spam Firewall the most comprehensive and affordable solution for all email-born threats."
What is Phishing and How Can I Avoid It Phishing is an attempt to impersonate a company in an electronic communication, such as email or instant messaging. mail is sent claiming to be a legitimate company in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. mail directs the user to visit a web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as passwords and credit card, social security, and bank account numbers, etc. The web site, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the user's information.

Recent highly publicized phishing scams, including those perpetrated against AOL, PayPal and eBay users have brought this growing problem to the forefront. However, it is the less publicized incidents that are quite common in daily business activities that can prove detrimental to many organizations. It is quite common for organizations to fall prey to phishers sending spoofed emails that appear to come from the victim's colleague with a message appearing to regard official business matters (i.e., "Hello! Per our discussion, attached is the outline of tomorrow's meeting agenda"). While the message seems harmless, the attachment often carries Trojans or viruses that could harm the network if opened. In other such incidences, victims may be tricked into providing password or other confidential information that could be used by the perpetrator to compromise the network.

With the Barracuda Spam Firewall, this anti-spoofing feature can be enabled and disabled on a domain-by-domain basis by selecting a checkbox in the domain settings menu of the GUI. The anti-spoofing feature also allows larger organizations to specify a list of IP addresses that are allowed to have a "From" address that appears from inside the organization to support multiple sites and multiple email servers. This new feature will be deployed to all current Barracuda Spam Firewall customers within the next week and will be automatically included for new and future customers.

The Barracuda Spam Firewall is available in four models and supports from 1,000 to 25,000 active users with no per user licensing fees. The Barracuda Spam Firewall can be installed in front of the email server in typically less than five minutes and is automatically updated hourly to block new forms of spam and viruses. Its architecture leverages open source spam and virus solutions in conjunction with ten defense layers: denial of service and security protection, IP block list, rate control, virus check with archive decompression, proprietary virus check, user specified rules, spam fingerprint check, intention analysis, spam rule-based scoring, and Bayesian analysis. This architecture minimizes the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day. Unlike software solutions, the Barracuda Spam Firewall reduces the load placed on the email server by off-loading both spam and virus filtering. Barracuda Networks also offers the Energize Update subscription service to automatically update the Barracuda Spam Firewall with the latest spam rules and virus definitions.
